RE: What Crisis! My clients are making money
This was a bold statement to make and to some extent; it has worked because you are now reading this. Therefore, you want to know how I can prove that statement. The point is that my clients understand their market and put in processes or systems to give them enough feedback to build or change their business. Making money is about having the right information to hand before making decisions; it is about understanding and building relationships with your customers.
I left London and the corporate world in 2004. Prior to leaving, I was a Development Manager in a large direct marketing company working business to business in the retail sector. Moving to Moray was a life changing decision for our family; it meant fresh air and new challenges. Over the last 3 years I have provided marketing support services across Moray and into the Highlands working with some of the big names and some of the smallest. I have met some fantastic people, seen some great projects and they have been able to benefit of my experience.
Lets look at the Crisis and how the media builds fear.
OK, life in the world over the last six months has taken a big turn. The myth or dream of ever lasting growth has gone and we have all woken up to a reality check.
Was the money there in the first place or did ‘they’ just make it up?
We could try and look at the realities of how we got here, and a Google search will get you a billion words or more on how or why it happened. What we seem to be missing is solutions. As a country we can cut or spend our way forward; at some point, the pain will need to be felt by the people, (you and I) with job loses, reduced spending, lower standards of living. This will affect or is affecting your business now..
The media has played its part in deepening our woes, instead of looking for the positive or at least finding a balance. They are set on perpetuating the current mind set by feeding us with doom and destruction. There must be some good news somewhere, but these people are too cynical to notice.
Fear leads to Paralysis.
Much of what is reported keeps people in their fear, this is the most powerful emotion and has the capacity to freeze and create inactivity. Getting beyond the fear will be the first part of the national recovery. Is it any wonder that people have stopped spending?
What is happening to you and your business?
This is the first part in moving your business forward. It is about recognising where you are. Do you feel strong and confident or are you in the fear? It was pointed out to me recently that most of the fears that we experience do not belong to us. It is other people’s fear that we are reacting to or noticing. This brings me back to the media and your customers. This diet of fear and woe makes your customers less responsive to advertising and promotions. What is your strategy to break through this?
Professional sports people use a COACH.
There is no surprise when we see a sports professional using a coach. It is a fact that to be at the top, a player requires a coach, Swimming, Football or Tennis there is someone there watching the action, they point out those little changes that shave seconds off the time or keep the ball on target.
Business coaching is a powerful tool for focused results.
The biggest block to success in the sports world is the fear of failure or poor performance. Just as on the sports field this fear exists in business and comes in many forms, from the simple self doubt to the extreme of inaction. Many a business fails because the owner does not recognize the issues early enough to take the corrective action. A Business Coach is there to point out the gaps and ask the questions that need answering.
Local business finds International opportunity.
It is easy to see an opportunity and be caught up in the process. It can take an outsider to see another path. A year back, I saw a client that was looking to sell a product to the local community. This was a project based on a material that required processing; there would be good repeat business, and the potential income would be reliable but restricted to a locality. We talked more about the opportunity, the income potential and his systems. Then I asked how he had produced this material and off came the covers to a machine he had built. This was a national and possibly international product, subject to patents and potential licenses. It might have been developed at a later stage it is unknown; he may have been happy with his local sales and never taken it further.
Take an immediate action, Do it Now…
I asked you earlier what you were doing to break through the malaise that everyone is feeling. When was the last time that you did a thorough review of your business, was it 6 months ago or last week? If yes to either of these, well done, you are possibly in the top 20% of companies that do any strategic planning. Yes, I am talking about planning. Where are you are going, are there lines in the sand, are you on target?
Take some time out and ask yourself where you want to be in 5 years and where is your business going. It is a question thrown out at management training courses and yet who takes the time to connect with their desire. I state desire because it takes passion to drive a project and this comes from the desire to achieve or get something done.
The coaching process gives support and drives action
It is all about questions. We ask questions to establish the facts from the assumptions. The more questions, the clearer the way forward. The coach holds accountability for actions and this enables the important things to get done. Here are some questions to ask yourself...
1. What is the most important task I do that brings in the most revenue?
2. What marketing activities do I / we do in the business?
3. How many of these were done this week?
4. How much advertising are we doing and is it working?
5. Do our customers come back?
6. How much do we know about our customers?
If you have read this far we have already started some Coaching
How does it feel when you think of those questions? Let me remind you, my clients are making money because they understand their market, they put processes or systems in place and get enough feedback to build or change their business.
When you start with a coach there is pre-session material to work through. This ensures that when we meet we can get some real tangible value from the process. The first session is fact finding. It is about collecting information to review what is happening now, how you got this far and where you want to be. We also look at resources (physical and intellectual) then we explore the current systems that are in place.
From there we get to grips on testing what works and how we can make it work better. The process is one of continuous improvement.

Still not convinced I can help? Just think on this...
We are all in unusual times, these market conditions have not been seen in years. The promotion and marketing that has worked up until now has or will become less effective. Over the next few years the businesses that thrive will be the ones that stand out from the crowd.
I will be running a monthly telephone seminar, interviews and new coaching circles in the next few weeks. Some of these will be FREE and they will all be a great resource with the opportunity to connect with other business owners. Leave me your details and I will keep you up to speed.
Also...
Take some time to answer the following questions. I will be sure to cover these issues in one of the seminars.
